July is National Social Wellness Month, which serves as an annual reminder of the power of social healing and how social interaction benefits your overall life. This month is intended to have you set aside time to nurture your social health and concentrate on building relationships with those you may already know, and those that you will soon meet.
Forms of Social Support
• Emotional
Emotional support is an intentional verbal and nonverbal way to display your affection and care for someone. When you are there for someone in their time of need, you’re showing them that they are loved and important. Through this, you may help them process, cope and manage challenge situations that they are dealing with.
• Informational
When you’re searching for answers, receiving advice from someone you trust is informational support. Informational support can be received from loved ones, co-workers, friends, and even through an online article or blog, such as this one! This form of support is more focused on growing your mind to solve or dissolve a situation in your life.
• Instrumental
Unlike the two forms of support listed above, instrumental support is a physical form of assistance. Instrumental support is more tangible or physical, such as helping someone pay rent who is unable to do so or walking someone’s dog who currently can’t do so.
The Importance of Interpersonal Relationships
Interpersonal relationships are very important to one’s well-being and benefits the workplace at large in a positive way. The definition of interpersonal relationship is summarized as how you connect with someone else and how they connect with you. A great example of an interpersonal relationships is the relationship at home, between a parent and their child. At work, this type of relationship can be between you and your boss or you and a co-worker. It’s important to build on this relationship and create a network for difficult situations.
